Chapter Seventeen

Liam

Today was finally the day of the long-awaited cabaret. I was glad it was happening, because after today everyone would finally stop talking about it.

After a lot of pleading, I’d convinced Sophia to leave Ava-Marie at my mom’s house so we could go on a date to the cabaret together. We hadn’t had much alone time at all since she was born, and ever since Sophia had reasoned we’d have to give up our daughter to save the tribe, Ava stuck to Sophia’s side like glue. She needed a little bit of a break, even if she didn’t want to admit it.

Sophia was in the bathroom, doing her makeup while I slipped on a suit jacket. Jonah had insisted the cabaret be black-tie formal. I’d have bitched and moaned any other time, but after what he’d gone through on the Hozho, I was willing to give the guy anything he wanted.

Jake was the only reason this play was happening at all. Jonah had wanted to call it off once he’d gotten back, a sure sign he was getting depressed. I didn’t blame him. He’d nearly died on the ship. The whole experience had to be traumatic. Though the river had healed his body, his mind was still wounded. He still jumped at loud noises and didn’t turn his back to anyone these days. Jake had thought the cabaret was the one thing that might bring some light back into Jonah’s eyes.

And maybe the rest of us, too. We needed a little happiness in the world.

“Do I look okay?” Sophia came out of the bathroom, looking nervous. She wore a fringy black flapper dress with red lipstick and a birdcage veil to fit the 1920’s theme, her hair in voluminous curls. Esis was at her feet, fiddling with a black bow tie around his neck.

“You’re a total bombshell, babe.” I put my arm around her waist and gave her a kiss. She never bothered with how she looked anymore— she was too worried. That made me worried about her.

“Well, as long as we hurry back.” She chewed her lip nervously.

“Let’s just try to have a good time.” I took her hand and squeezed it tightly. I just wanted to give us a night off, a night without thinking about stuff. She had to at least try.

We rode Julian to town, where a large crowd had gathered. Hok’evale had its own theater, set into the side of a stone cave. It wasn’t anything impressive, more or less just a place for school plays. The doors were big enough for Familiars to fit through, and Julian followed us in as we entered the auditorium.

The seats inside had been temporarily removed to make place for tables and chairs. The tables were covered in white cloth, the seats red velvet. They were gathered around a broad stage with a long red curtain, spotlights flashing across it. The tables themselves had bottles of wine chilling in ice, with candles lit in the center and baskets of rolls set out for appetizers.
